Research

The Healing Foundation has an opportunity to make an important contribution in shaping new responses in healing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our unique position allows us to find, develop, and distribute new ways of healing.

Research and evaluation is critical in building a knowledge base through identifying what works and key elements for success.

The research team is currently working on the following:

Stolen Generations ‘Looking Back to Build Future’ Project

  • Analyse 100 oral history interviews of Stolen Generations members collected by National Library of Australia
  • Identify risk and resilience factors for current wellbeing
  • Identify the lessons from history that can make for strong resilient children
  • To gain insight into and spread the story of the Stolen Generations
  • To determine healing needs of Stolen Generations
  • To build a solid research base to expand Stolen Generations research

We have engaged several Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers who are being trained in qualitative data management techniques.

Therapeutic Healing Centres A Literature Review

There is within the broad Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community considerable emerging interest exploring the development and/or need for Healing Centres or therapeutic communities. The Healing Foundation is exploring the option of focussing funding on the concept of healing centres, or healing communities. The Canadian Healing Foundation in its life funded and evaluated a large number of such centres. This Review is distinct from the Healing programs literature review in that its major focus is the creation of centres, (see document below) not the conduct of programs.
